Classical Anti-Hero: A morally lacking, aggressive trainer who doesn't treat his team with any respect and regularly kills wild Pokémon to train up his team who just happens to be the main character. It was alluded to throughout Season 2, until he finally reveals what happened after his fight with the Elite Four and killing Chatquaza in the leadup to Unova's Elite Four. Chekhov's Gun: Derek's embarrassing fight with Steven was not shown in Season 1.Butt-Monkey: Just because he's The Leader or The Protagonist doesn't mean he's immune to some verbal backlash from his Pokemon.Big Brother Bully: Does not get along with his younger step-brother, Wally.

Bad Boss: Besides sending his team out in battles, he doesn't take particularly good care of them, acknowledging he'd have zero issue trading them away and doesn't feed them often either.Archnemesis Dad: Has no positive interactions with his father throughout the series. All Men Are Perverts: Makes some rather suggestive comments regarding Porygon or gym leaders, wants to steal the clothes of and kiss trainers he beats, and moans suggestively at a gif of a pufferfish moaning.Regularly acts as the The Leader, while just as often engaging in the same antics as his team. The Protagonist of the story soon after moving to Littleroot Town, he sets out on a Pokémon journey, in the process encountering and capturing some rather strange Pokémon.

"You either die a winner or die a loser, it's your choice."
